I haven’t been inside the building for ten minutes yet, and I’m already fighting annoyance. It only took walking through the doors of Grayson Global for me to go from the complete privacy of Alis’ house to being on full display like a fish in a restaurant tank. All eyes on me, again.

I no longer stop anywhere before I come to work, so I am forced to go to the break room. The men milling around, talking about the Ravens’ game, pause to smile and look me over with bold interest. The women are eagle eyed and their smiles half cold but no questions. That’s the text I got from Sandy this morning. No one is to question me about my personal life or allowed to harass me. Grayson has my back yet again. And today we got free breakfast. It’s the little things in life.

My boss believes me, I’m wearing my killer blue outfit, and Alis is in love with me. I still don’t want to be around these people, but I force the smile. “Good morning.”

I don’t wait for an answer, just grab coffee and, though they have my favorite breakfast box, I choose another. Today, I feel different, and I want something else.

Greg intercepts me halfway to my office. “Hey, thank you for the email to Grayson. I was planning on responding to him today since he always insists on us not working past our regular work schedule.”

“It’s no problem, G. I just wanted to make sure he got his answers. The thing with Grayson is that he will continue to come back unless he gets the information he needs.”

“I’ve been working for him for ten years. We went to college together. I watched him go from dirt poor to nipping on the heels of Jeff Bezos. I know how he operates.” His tone is biting like February morning air.

Heat flashes over my face. What was that? “I know you have. It’s just Grayson was starting to get impatient. He also clearly needed the answers for the interview.”

“You would know better than me since the interview was about you, right?”

I tighten my hand around the coffee cup. Why is he upset with me? “Greg—”

“Hi Mila. Hi Greg.” We turn to Carter as he joins us. “Greg, I need to run something by you when you get a chance.”

Greg turns away from me to face Carter. “Yeah, let’s go now.”

I open my mouth, but he stalks away. Carter looks at me, his confusion mirroring mine.

“We’ll talk in the meeting,” I say and head to my office.

What the hell was that? Did I overstep in my haste to answer Grayson’s questions?

I unpack my laptop and breakfast, still unsettled by the conversation. I take a couple bites of my breakfast sandwich and power up my machine. I’ll set up a meeting with Greg and figure out what’s going on.

My phone pings and there’s the text Alis promised he would send when he got to the office.

Alis
